What You REALLY Need to Know about Starting a Business

Starting a business can be amazing and terrifying at the same time. You’ll run into challenges, surprises, and lessons – sometimes all within 5 minutes. There are so many courses, books, and websites full of information about starting a business. But few of them will tell you the hard truth – the things that you don’t WANT to hear, but the things you definitely NEED to hear.

Let’s get into it!

1. When You Want to Give Up, Try a Different Way

Every entrepreneur runs into moments of doubt and frustration. It's natural to feel like giving up when things aren't going as planned. But instead of abandoning your mission, look at your challenges from a different perspective. Try something different. Most likely, the answer you need lies in adjusting your strategy, not in giving up. Remember this: perseverance plus flexibility equals wins.

2. Study Other Business Owners

One of the most beneficial things you can do as a new business owner is to learn from those who have gone before you. Follow colleagues, mentors, and even competitors closely. Study them IN DEPTH. Look at what they do well and even what they don’t do well. Join industry groups, attend networking events, and participate in online communities. This research and networking will give you insights that can save you time, money, and effort and, most importantly, help you avoid common mistakes.

3. Not All Advice is Good Advice

In the world of business, everyone seems to have an opinion. While seeking advice is important, it's equally important to figure out which advice is worth taking. You won't be able to sustain what's not aligned with your vision and capabilities. I REPEAT: You won't be able to sustain what's not aligned with your vision and capabilities. And in reality, some people just don’t know what they're talking about. Trust your instincts and be selective about whose advice you follow. Focus on guidance from people with proven experience and a clear understanding of your industry. But again, it comes down to YOUR vision and YOUR capabilities.

4. Strangers Will Support You More Than Your Family

This is the one thing that takes so many entrepreneurs by surprise. It’s so disheartening to realize that your family may not be as supportive of your business goals as you hoped and expected. Strangers and new connections will typically give you more encouragement and support than those closest to you. This is NOT a reflection of your worth or the viability of your business idea! Instead, it's a common experience for many entrepreneurs. Seek out and build a community of like-minded individuals who believe in your vision and will cheer you on. Wherever the support comes from, let it fuel you!
